Natural Herbs for Weight Loss

Losing weight is a problem affecting billions of people across the globe. Excess weight can not only negatively affect a person’s self esteem, it also poses serious health risks some of which can be fatal. There are several causes of weight gain including lifestyle, diet and genetics. Several methods of weight loss exist and among these is the use of natural herbs. Some of the common natural herbs for weight loss include the following.

Green tea extract

Green tea has been used for medicinal uses for centuries in china. It contains a group of antioxidants called catechins. These chemicals have been found to be effective in boosting metabolism allowing the body to burn more fat aiding in weight loss.


Ginseng is another natural herb that has been used for centuries as an energy booster. It contains different chemicals including antioxidants, alkaloids and sterols. Ginseng increases the body’s metabolism aiding in fat burning. Its ability to boost energy is especially beneficial if the patient includes exercise in their weight loss regime.


Cinnamon is another natural herb that is commonly used for weight loss. It contains various antioxidants which help to control blood sugar levels. As such, blood sugar is used for the body’s energy needs rather than stored as fat.


Ephedra is a natural herb that contains various chemicals proven to increase metabolism and lower cholesterol levels in the body. However, studies conducted on this herb indicate that some of the chemicals it contains can have severe side effects. As such, it’s banned in some countries and therefore not so popular.

Guar gum

The seed of the guar plant produces a gum rich in fiber. When consumed, guar gum works by preventing the absorption of fats in the stomach by binding them. After this, the fats are removed from the body through excretion.


The hoodia plant is native to the southern African deserts. Its root has been used for centuries by bushmen to suppress hunger and thirst while they are out hunting. Hoodia works as an appetite suppressant allowing the weight loss enthusiast eat less and thus allowing the body burn its excess fat for its energy needs.

Bitter orange

The bitter orange tree grows naturally in Asia and Africa. It contains a chemical compound synephrine. This chemical acts as a metabolism booster allowing the body to burn more calories. Like with some natural weight loss remedies, it has been found to have some side effects and its use should be controlled and monitored by a trained physician.


Flaxseed is another natural weight loss product derived from the flax plant. Its unique characteristics include swelling when exposed to moisture and the body’s inability to digest it if ingested whole. Weight loss occurs when flaxseed soaked in water is ingested whole. It gives you a feeling of fullness allowing you to control your eating habits. As such, the body is forced to turn to its fat reserves for its energy needs.

There are dozens of natural herbs for weight loss. Some of these herbs haven’t been fully researched. In addition, some of these herbs have been found to have mild to severe side effects. It’s recommended that you consult with your physician before taking any of these herbs especially if you are taking other drugs or have specific health problems.
