Migraine and its herbal therapy

Headaches are common in everyday life because of stress, lack of sleep, blood pressure issues etc. These types of headaches are temporary and can be relieved when their cause goes away. However, there is a type of headache which is not timely and reoccurs because of some trigger. This type of headache is known as Migraine.

In migraine, there is extremely severe ache to only half region of head. The pain is pulsating and duration varies person to person. It can last from as short as 2 hours to as long as 3 days. Along with the headache, it can also be associated with nausea and vomiting. Increased sound and light sensitivity is also there.


Some migraines are trigger because of environmental factors such as allergies, heat, light etc, while some are genetic. Migraine due to environmental factors can be controlled by limiting the exposure to the factor which is causing headache whereas for genetic type, add some herbs and plants in your daily diet, it will help you to control migraine.

Medicines that can exclusively cure migraine are not available yet. In general practice, usually the drug is given that can help in lowering the intensity of headache. Changing the dietary habits and adding few essential herbs in your diet can facilitate you to get rid of migraine forever.

Herbs for migraine headache

  1. 1.      Ginger root

Ginger is a plant which is used in almost every meal to enhance the taste of food and it also has delicious taste. Medicinal properties of ginger can cure migraine and its symptoms of nausea or vomiting. It has the anti-inflammatory properties which can relieve pain.

  1. 2.      Feverfew

Feverfew has been used to cure migraine for several years. Parthenolide is present in feverfew which gives relieve from the seizures of muscle. It is best to be used in exhaustion or stress which are also the cause of migraine. In a study, people have shown to have decrease in migraine reoccurrence and improvement in symptoms who took feverfew leaves daily.

  1. 3.      Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba has substances such as flavonoids, ginkgolides, bilobalides etc which helps to treat all the symptoms related to migraine. It gives relieve from stress, exhaustion, blur eyes etc. It increases the blood circulation in a body which makes body active and also prevents allergies which are main reason of migraine headaches.

  1. 4.      Butterbur root

It is the most active pain killer for migraine headaches. Users of butterbur roots have reported positive effects of this herb in curing migraine issues. The petasin and isopetasin diminish seizure and irritation which are caused by migraine.

  1. 5.      Tea

Tea has always been used for curing headaches. Caffeine owns some medicinal properties in providing ease to mind. This positive effect makes people drink tea at the initial stages of migraine which might help in relieving pain to some extent.

  1. 6.      Chaste berry

Migraine is more common issue in women rather than men. Many women suffer from migraine because of their monthly cycle, which give them severe migraine attack. The hormonal imbalance is the causative agent for them. Some particular amount of chest berry if taken early in the morning can cure migraine.

  1. 7.      Flax seed

In the family of herbs, flax seeds also play an important part in curing the migraine headache. Flax seeds have two main components that are essential to relieve migraine: Omega-3 and Lignans. Omega-3 is a good fatty acid that helps brain to work well. Lignans has the estrogen like property and helps in maintaining the hormone level in female that has positive effect in curing migraine.
